[...] Somewhere in Africa, there’s a room full of vinyl records… Discovered of course by none other than Voodoo Frank, the legendary DJ and record collector who sold of everything and spent three years in Africa hunting down rare funk records. We talked to Voodoo Frank about his trip a while back, you can read the interview here. [...]

There is no musical style that is oficially called "Voodoo Funk". I chose this name for my blog and also for my party event here in NYC mainly because it sounds good... of course it also has a meaning:
Voodoo or Vodoun originates in Benin. The practice of this religion has nothing to do with whatever Western Clishes that will now probably come to your mind. There are animal sacrifices and other rather archaic elements to it but there are also other shrines that worship gods which demand prefume, candy or alcohol as a sacrifice and which don't like blood.
Every god or "diety" has a specific rhythm and dance that it enjoys and worhipping the gods of Vodoun always involves lots of music and dance (and in some cases alcohol...). A lot of these rhythms were brought to America or the Caribbeans with the salve trade. Salsa originally is a Vodoun rhythm that originates in Benin. The Vodoun rhythms of Sakpata and Sato are syncopated drum rhythms that in my opinion are the original source of Soul and Funk.
