Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story
When talking about the greatest and most important labels, it’s hard to avoid mentioning Stax Records, even if it never reached the sustained celebrity of rival Motown Records. Founded 1957 in Memphis Stax Records launched soul music greats such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Booker T. & The MGs among others and with it’s refusal to bow for old lines of segregation, the label became closely identified with the civil rights movement of the 1960s and ’70s.
The excellent PBS broadcast “Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story” touches upon all this as it highlights the rise, the fall and the eventual recovery of Stax Records.
