Being a NYLVI Seller

How do I become a seller on NYLVI?

First you'll need to register. Be careful when choosing your username, as it will also be your shop URL, located at http://www.nylvi.com/username. Once you've registered for a account, you can upgrade to a seller account. To do this, click the Sell link in the top navigation bar and follow the on-screen directions.

What is a shop on NYLVI?

Every seller on NYLVI gets their own shop free of charge. The web address (also called a URL) for your shop will be in this format: http://www.nylvi.com/username. This is the link you can share to easily direct people to your items for sale. Every item you list will automatically show up in your shop, in addition to being placed in all categories you listed it in.

Is my username also my shop name?

The username will be the URL of your shop. You can edit your shop name if you like, however the URL will always be your original username, so please take a moment to consider your choice before submitting a username.

Can I change my username?

No. Usernames cannot be changed, as this undermines the feedback system.

Can I customize my shop?

Yes, you can. Once you're logged in, click the Your NYLVI link in the upper right, and go to the Shop Setup section. Here you can upload a banner to be displayed at the top of your shop's page, give or edit your shop name, and enter any additional information about your shop to appear beneath the banner. All of these are optional.

Selling

What can I sell on NYLVI?

NYLVI is all about vinyl. You can sell all types and formats of vinyl records, both old and new.

What can't I sell on NYLVI?

You can't sell any other audio formats, or any other items. It's really all about vinyl!

How does NYLVI pick the Collector's Items on the home page?

The Collector's Items on the home page are randomly selected from all the records named collector's items by the sellers. We try to update the collector's items section on the front page several times a day to provide further exposure for more sellers.

Which records count as collector's items?

NYLVI leaves this judgment to the sellers. However, the record in question should obviously possess characteristics that justify its status as a collector's item.

I have a rare record for sale. How do I list it as collector's Item?

That's easy. You just tag Yes (Y) in the Collector's Items column in your spreadsheet or choose Yes (Y) on the Collector's Items box when you add a record to your inventory. You can also do this later when you edit a listing. However, remember that you also have to add an image, and release info for it to show up in the collector's items section.

Your Shop

What is the Shop Title?

It's the name of your shop. Remember that your username is also your shop's URL (http://www.nylvi.com/username). Usernames cannot be changed.

What is the shop's About box?

It's a text box that appears on your shop page. Here you can write about yourself and your shop, and notify buyers of any important information (e.g. if you have a shop sale or go on vacation).

What is the Message to Buyers?

This is a message on the NYLVI transaction invoice that is automatically sent to all buyers. You can use it if there's a memo or catchphrase you'd like your buyers to read.

What are Shop Policies?

Your Shop Policies page provides information buyers need to know in order to make an informed purchase from your shop. On NYLVI, each transaction is made directly between the buyer and the seller. NYLVI has some site-wide policies (like what can or cannot be listed on the site), but it is up to each seller to determine certain sales terms for their own shop.

Where do I add/edit my Shop Policies page?

You can edit your Shop Policies page by going to Your NYLVI > Shop Policies.

Are Shop Policies required by every seller?

Shop policies are required, for payment, shipping, backorders and returns/exchanges. These policies will help you and your customers resolve possible disputes that may arise. For example, knowing in advance whether a record can be returned might save you and your customer a lot of time and can help make the transaction go more smoothly.

Do a seller's Shop Policies override NYLVI's site-wide policies?

No. A seller's Shop Policies may not contradict NYLVI's site-wide policies. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Guidelines of NYLVI and our Terms of Use before writing your Shop policies.

A record has disappeared from my inventory. Where is it?

If a record that has a quantity of 1 in stock is sold, the listing is removed and you'll see it under Your NYLVI > Orders.

Can I change the order of my listings in my store?

No. The records in your shop are sorted alphabetically as the default setting.

How do I see the public view of my shop?

You can type http://www.nylvi.com/username directly in a web browser's address bar. Or, if you're already logged in, go to Your NYLVI and click the link at the bottom of the left-side navigation bar.

How do I edit my listings?

Go to Your NYLVI > Inventory, and click the edit link in the row of the record you wish to edit. Make sure you click Save when you're done editing.

How do I delete a listing?

Click the Delete link on Your NYLVI > Inventory page in the row of the record you wish to delete.

How do I feature records in my shop?

To feature records at teh top of your shop page, go to Your NYLVI > Your Inventory and click edit next to each record you want to feature. Then choose Y (yes) in the Featured Record box. You can choose up to 10 records.

How do I upload a shop picture/banner?

First, make sure you have your image properly sized and saved on your local computer.
(We recommend you prepare your image 560 pixels wide and 100 pixels high. If you upload a picture which differs from these dimensions we will resize the picture to fit the 560 pixel width, while keeping the original image's proportions.)
Banners must be .jpg, .png or .gif file format.
In the Shop Appearance section, click the Browse button to locate this file and click upload. Your new banner will show up in your shop right away.

Why does my banner look wrong/fuzzy/pixelated/stretched?

Your source file was not the proper dimensions. If the picture was originally less than 560 pixels wide, we've had to stretch it to achieve the correct width. This will result in a fuzzy look.

How do I create my own banner?

You'll need to use an image editing program to make your graphic the right size (560px by 100px) for a NYLVI banner. You can also combine words and images on your banner. You should save the image in gif, png or jpeg format.

Image Help

I'm having trouble uploading pictures. Can you help?

Ensure the file is a properly encoded .jpg, .gif or .png. Is there a firewall that could be blocking your uploads? Try to alter your firewall settings or take the firewall down briefly to test the transfer.

What size (dimensions) are the thumbnails and full images?

Thumbnails are either 75 pixels square. Full-sized images are 200 x 200 pixels.

Why do my photos look wrong (blurry, distorted, etc)?

Make sure your original image is at least 75 x 75 pixels for thumbnails and 200 x 200 pixels for full-sized images. If it's not, we'll stretch it to fit the page and this will create distortions.

What file format can I use for my photo?

The following file extensions are valid: .jpg, .gif and .png. All images you upload are resampled on the web site as .jpg files.

What resolution should my photo be?

Every image on the web is displayed at 72dpi (dots per inch). Anything greater than that will create very large file sizes without adding anything to the quality.

Should I use CMYK or RGB for my listing photos?

You should use RGB, which stands for Red/Green/Blue. CMYK is only for print (and stands for Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black). CMYK images will not work on the web. You can change the color mode of your images to RGB using an image editing program. (Most photos from a digital camera will already be in RGB mode.)

Transactions

What happens after I receive an order?

When a buyer orders a record, you are sent a sales notification email containing all the relevant info for the sale (item, buyer, payment method, etc.). You respond by updating the order to 'Confirmation' and notify the buyer. The record(s)' quantity is automatically reduced by the number sold, and will show up in Your NYLVI > Orders. When payment is received you update the status again and ship the order.

Where do I find my orders?

All your orders are located in Your NYLVI > Orders. Click the on the order number to view its details.

How do I contact the buyer?

You can contact the buyer through the message system on the order page. You can also find their email address in the sales notification that NYLVI emails to you for each item sold.

When does the buyer pay me?

Most buyers will pay right away, especially if using PayPal. If the buyer is sending payment by mail (such as a check or money order), or via bank transfer/wire transfer, it takes a bit longer. If you haven't heard from the buyer, you should contact them with a polite reminder.
